When you are assigned to write a comparative essay, you are expected to compare and contrasts two different subjects. The body of the essay is the main section where the similarities and differences between two subjects are discussed briefly. Therefore, it is important that you must list out the similarities and differences you are going to discuss in your comparative essay.

Once you have considered the points you are about to discuss, decide how you will organize the similarities and difference of two subjects in the body of the comparative essay. There are three different methods to compare two subjects which are given below.

  • Mixed Paragraph Method:

In this method, you have to compare each aspect of both subjects in different paragraphs. You will discuss the first aspect of each subject in the first paragraph, the second aspect of each subject in the second paragraph, and the third aspect of each subject in the third paragraph. If you have initiated your first paragraph by discussing the aspect of object “A” then you must also initiate all other body paragraphs discussing another aspect of subject “A” first and discuss the same aspect of subject “B”  in the second place.

1st paragraph: 1 aspect of subject “A” / 1 aspect of subject “B”

2nd paragraph: 2 aspect of subject “A” / 2 aspect of subject “B”

3rd paragraph: 3 aspect of subject “A” / 3 aspect of subject “B”

  • Alternative Subjects Method:

Write each paragraph to the single subject and alternate the subjects in every other paragraph. However, make sure that you alter only the subject in each paragraph, not the aspect. The paragraph about the 1st aspect of subject “A” must be followed by the paragraph about the same aspect of the subject “B”. Then discuss the 2nd aspect of subject “A” in the third paragraph and this must be followed by the fourth paragraph discussing the same aspect of the subject “B”.
Follow the same pattern for other aspects.

1st paragraph: 1st aspect of subject “A”

2nd paragraph: 1st aspect of subject “B”

3rd paragraph: 2nd aspect of subject “A”

4th paragraph: 2nd aspect of subject “B”

5th paragraph: 3rd aspect of subject “A”

6th paragraph: 3rd aspect of subject “B”

  • Dedicated set method

In this method, cover a single subject in the first set of paragraphs and then discuss another subject in the latter set of paragraphs. Discusses all three aspects of subject “A” individually in first three paragraphs and then discuss the same three aspects of subject “B” in the latter three paragraphs.

First Set:

1st paragraph: 1st aspect of subject “A”

2nd paragraph: 2nd aspect of subject “A”

3rd paragraph: 3rd aspect of subject “A”

Second Set:

1st paragraph: 1st aspect of subject “B”

2nd paragraph: 2nd aspect of subject “B”

3rd paragraph: 3rd aspect of subject “B”
